This year I travelled to Denmark — to Copenhagen, to be precise. It’s a truly fascinating city, especially from an architectural point of view. It’s not without reason that Copenhagen is considered a capital of architecture. I set aside a few days in July to take a closer look at the city and to share some tips on interesting photo spots in Copenhagen.

The first question I asked when travelling was about accommodation. Anyone who has ever been to Amsterdam and looked for a hotel knows how expensive it can be there. In Copenhagen, it’s more or less okay. On my daughter’s recommendation, I stayed at the Next House Copenhagen. Admittedly, most of the people staying there were around 25 years younger than me — but that keeps you young.

My next task was to find a cheap place to park. After some research, I found a street where I could leave my car free of charge. The Amager Strand metro station is very close by, and from there you can get to the city centre in around 15 minutes on the M2 line.

Speaking of the metro: tickets for the metro, train and bus can be purchased via an app if you don’t want to deal with the ticket machines. The apps for Apple and Android are provided by Copenhagen’s public transport operators. You can easily book single journeys as well as day and weekly tickets. This makes sense, because checks are very frequent — I was checked about 10 times on roughly 15 journeys.

But now to the photo spots in Copenhagen that I picked out ahead of the photo tour:

National Aquarium Denmark, Den Blå Planet

This was my first destination because of its proximity to the car park mentioned above. The outdoor area is free to enter and really impressive. The curved lines, combined with water and clouds, offer a great motif. Visitors, who are usually present, can be easily faded out with a long exposure. The perfect time of day is late afternoon or early evening, when the sun shines on the aluminium structure.

Metro-Station Norreport

Nørreport Station is the busiest railway station in Denmark, with around 300,000 travellers a day. But that doesn’t automatically make it a worthwhile photo motif. In fact, the visual effect only really comes into its own after dark, when the illuminated letters create a beautiful scene. An ultra-wide-angle lens is a good choice here, as the distance between the letters and the poster columns isn’t particularly large. I took the photo above with the full-frame Sony 20 mm.

Axel Towers

The Axel Towers are an office complex right in the centre of Copenhagen. Tivoli Gardens are just opposite, and the main railway station isn’t far away either. The Axel Towers consist of five round towers. They’re all different heights and have between five and 15 floors. The tallest tower measures 67 metres. They’re interesting because you can photograph them from many different perspectives from the centre — the inner courtyard. With every turn upwards, you get a different motif. The courtyard is freely accessible, and here too an ultra-wide-angle lens is a must.

Grundtvigs Kirke

This church in Copenhagen’s Bispebjerg district is one of the city’s best-known churches thanks to its unusual design. It has an extraordinary atmosphere and beautiful curved arches. Especially when the sun is shining, you’ll find great shadows inside that can be incorporated beautifully into your composition. It’s easy to reach by metro or bus, but it’s a little outside the city centre.

Kaktus Towers

The Kaktus Towers are a modern and very stylish office and residential complex in the centre of Copenhagen. Their pointed “spikes” offer plenty of great photo opportunities. The individual spikes in particular can be photographed and framed really well.

I hope I was able to give you a few tips for your next photo trip to Copenhagen. Have a great trip and take some beautiful photos!
